Based on the novel 'Here Be Monsters!', 'The Box Trolls' is the latest stop-motion animated feature from Laika (Coraline and ParaNorman).
Concerned by the threat of Box Trolls (trolls who wear boxes) snatching the children of Cheesebridge, Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris) enlists the help of pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Sir Ben Kingsley) to get rid of them. Every bit as creepy and grotesque as the Child Catcher in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', Archibald agrees to in exchange for a white hat that grants access to the exclusive cheese tasting room.
Very much misunderstood, a sewer-dwelling Box Troll named Fish even cares for and raises a human boy known as Eggs (that's the food displayed on his box). Rumoured to have been abducted and killed ten years ago, Eggs could be the key to clearing their name. Along the way he befriends a girl named Winnie (Elle Fanning), who also happens to be the Mayor's daughter.
Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan also lend their voices, with typically fantastic performances across the board. Laika's movies are always best enjoyed and appreciated on 3D Blu-ray, and their latest effort is certainly no exception.
'The Box Trolls' is a deliciously dark animated adventure. The characters and sets are all gloriously grotesque, with plenty of fun to be had for children and adults alike. Be sure to sit through the credits too, for an incredible glimpse at the work that went into the production, accompanied by a new song from Eric Idle.
Extras include preliminary animatic sequences, Dare to be square: Behind the scenes of The Boxtrolls, a feature commentary with directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, and five featurettes. Altogether it adds up to a great value package for collectors.
