Summer is just around the corner, and as always there are a bunch of huge budget movies awaiting release to keep us entertained. Here we'll look at five of the most keenly anticipated.
Sin City: A Dame To Kill For
“Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” is going to be a treat for fans of the film noir genre, with crime, gambling and guns galore. It's the long-awaited sequel to Frank Miller's 2005 Sin City, and was meant to be released in autumn 2013 but was held back until this summer. Four short stories will be interwoven, including a gambling tale in a Las Vegas-inspired setting, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's likely to make a lot of people want to jump on a plane to Vegas and hit the tables; if you can't manage that, you can always play for free online at sites like Reel Thunder. Jessica Alba and Eva Green also star.
Edge Of Tomorrow
Tom Cruise is back this summer in “Edge Of Tomorrow”, a sci-fi blockbuster with Earth conquered by an alien race, and some intriguing time-travel action. Cruise's character is killed battling the invaders early on, but comes back to fight and fight again, learning more about the enemy as he goes. Emily Blunt is a somewhat unlikely-sounding choice as the Special Forces soldier with whom Cruise teams up. Apparently she cried after trying on the battle suit for the first time, as it was “too heavy”.
Transformers: Age Of Extinction
“Transformers: Age Of Extinction” is released around the end of June, and you'll know whether you want to see it or not – it's the fourth in the series, following 2011's “Dark Of The Moon”. Fans will be looking forward to their first sight of the intriguingly-titled Dinobots, while “Frazier” aficionados will be able to enjoy Kelsey Grammer's role as a slightly crazed government official. Michael Bay directs again.
If you enjoyed “The Matrix” trilogy, you'll be eager to see “Jupiter Ascending”, which marks the return of The Wachowskis to science fiction movie making. Mila Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones, a downtrodden, hard-working janitor who is told by Channing Tatum's space warrior that she's actually Earth royalty; she effectively owns the planet. Alien businessmen, who control various planets as part of a business empire, have other ideas, and set out to stop her...
Originally scheduled for release on 18th July, Warner Bros. have now moved Jupiter Ascending's release date to 6th February 2015. So we will have to wait a little longer to enjoy the Wachowskis next movie event.
The Expendables 3
Arthritic action is back on the big screen this summer with “The Expendables 3”, in which Sly Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger return, with Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren, to battle an arms dealer played by Mel Gibson. Gibson's character, Conrad Stonebanks, is on a mission to destroy the Expendables, presumably before they die of natural causes. It's not all elderly folk however – Stallone and the other screenwriters have decided to bring in some fresh faces. Kellan “Twilight” Lutz, and martial artist, model, Ultimate Fighter and actress Ronda Rousey will bring down the average age of the cast by a few years.
