Directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters), Draft Day is set during the annual NFL (National Football League) Draft. No stranger to sporting dramas, Kevin Costner plays Sonny Weaver Jr. - general manager of the Cleveland Browns.
When Sonny secures the number one draft pick, the fate of the team and his very career are in his hands. Coach Penn (Denis Leary) helps consider the options while rattling out his usual stream of consciousness, along with a Google-worthy collection of insider football terms.
Set during a single day, it's a bit like an episode of 24 with an off-duty Jack Bauer deciding who to invite to his birthday party. As the minutes tick down until the draft, anxious players tempers flare with Brian Drew (Tom Welling) even trashing the office in frustration. As everyone starts to lose faith, it's up to Sonny to make the ultimate play for survival.
The well-rounded cast also includes Jennifer Garner as Sonny's colleague and partner, along with Terry Crews, Frank Langella, Sean Combs, Sam Elliot, Rosanna Arquette and Ellen Burstyn.
While some of the nuances of Draft Day's plot may be lost on those uninitiated to NFL, you'll still appreciate the drama and tension, even if you don't entirely know why. Ivan Reitman's trademark humour and heart help make Draft Day an enjoyable, if ultimately forgettable experience.
DVD extras include deleted scenes, and an audio commentary with writers Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph.
